The following work was undertaken by Wood of Huddersfield as part of the complete overhaul and restoration of the St. Luke's Hill & Son organ.:-

  • All of the pipework is now extremely dirty and is to be cleaned and the speech reset. The reeds in particular will require attention as they have become erratic and irregular throughout the compass.
  • The soundboards containing the pallet valves, which admit wind to the pipework, require full bench treatment and the pallets re-covering in felt and sheepskin.
  • The large double-rise bellows, which supplies the wind to the whole organ is now leaking quite badly and needs to have all the old leather removed and be re-leathered in the traditional manner using hot glue and the best quality sheepskin available.
  • The pedal, key and stop actions are to be re-bushed and centres made good to take up the slack play which the organ has developed over the years.
  • The keyboards and pedal boards require work on bushing and worn surfaces (particularly in the pedals). These will be returned to the workshops for re-facing and re-bushing.

Work was started on the instrument in October 2006 and completed by November 2007.

This project, which cost in the region of £80,000, was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, along with grants from The Pilling Trust, Council for the Care of Churches and the Allchurches fund.

Thanks also go to all the generous sponsors and donors who have made this project possible.
